Online Travel Vietnam: Anyone thinking of visiting Kien Giang Province should keep aside a spare few hours for the U Minh Thuong Forest (Upper U Minh Forest).
The area is so vast and holds so many secrets, that you are just dipping your toe in with a short visit but is an enchanting experience.
And of course when touring this area, food is a must. The local dish bun ca loc rung (rice noodles mixed with wild loc fish) has to be on your must-do list.
To serve up this treat, locals catch the loc fish and boil the meat in coconut water with the fish bones to make the soup sweet and add in spices and onions. Served with noodle and wild banana flowers from the forest, this is a dish to savor.
U Minh Thuong has more than 21,107 hectares, of which 8,000 in the central area are preserved stringently, while the rest are residential homes, paddy fields, gardens and areas of cajuput where locals hire land of the government.
The biodiversity of the tropical mangrove forest is a joy to behold and is considered to be the green lung of the Mekong Delta.
