Inspiring soul in sugared dry jam

Online Travel Vietnam: In this article, you are going to discover a distinguished food of Hanoians. Actually, it is not easy to translate its name into English. This food is made of fruits such as apricot, plum, kumquat, carambola, lemon and so on. After cleaned, fruit is mixed with salt or sugar and finally dried. I temporarily call it “sugared dry jam”.

One winter night, while almost shops on Hang Duong street were closed, I was seeing a group gather in front of one shop. I was very curious and came closer. There were many artistic works such as a turtle, a chicken, a shrimp, a crab, a fish and so on that amazed me so much. More interestingly, all of them are made of sugared dry jam by Mr. Bui Van Hung, a sugared dry jam shopkeeper.
Mr. Hung was very keen on statue modeling when he was a child. Thanks to this special talent, he could make many beautiful artistic works without any professional training. According to him, the most important thing is desirable ambition. Referring to his set of tools, he showed me scissors, a towel and many small bamboo toothpicks. "It is very important to have skilful hands and precise eyes" - Mr. Hung said.
